A Visit To Lake Como

By Chris Edgeller

I have recently returned from a trip to the Italian lakes – to the glorious Lake Como, staying at the renowned Grand Hotel Tremezzo  – and I couldn’t be more excited to share some of my experiences from the trip with you.

Lake Como

The Italian Lakes offer something for everyone; pretty towns and villages perched on the water’s edge, a backdrop of mountains, fine buildings and, of course, stunning scenery.

Embraced by green wooded embankments and backed by the snow-capped Alps, Lake Como is the most dramatic of the lakes. Como is a thriving town best known for its silk production; you can take a ferry from its pier to reach Bellagio, a jewel of a town sitting at the spot where Lake Como divides into three parts. Villa Carlotta is an elegant 17th-century mansion set in lush formal terraced gardens.

My visit to Lake Como

With just over a two-hour flight from the UK into Milan in the northern region of Lombardy, followed by a short 40-minute transfer to Lake Como, I was quickly transported into the heart of northern Italy’s natural beauty. I stayed at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo which is simply stunning.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Dating back to the early 1900s, the Liberty style Grand Hotel Tremezzo is decorated with ornate ceilings and fine period furnishings, in keeping with its traditional surroundings whilst reviving the archetypal glamour of the Belle Époque. Guests can choose to dine in the main La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi restaurant with superb lake views, renowned for its excellent Italian cuisine created by Gualtiero Marchesi. Other delectable delights include an array of Italian restaurants for all gourmet palates. L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar offers a more informal option for a dinner based on fondues and barbecues.

Stunning Lake Views

Be part of the next century of Lake Como’s glamourous tradition and take in the stunning lake views at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. This art nouveau landmark, across from Bellagio peninsula, features 90 sumptuous rooms and suites as well as the aristocratic Villa Sola Cabiati – an 18th-century residence with six suites. There is also award-winning T Spa with its panoramic views, three pools (including one that floats on the lake), a private sandy beach, and romantic tours in the Venetian motor launches. The hotel has two boats of its own and will take guests on tours of the Lake or even fishing on it if you so desire. Or if you prefer some privacy, we can book you a Rooftop Suite to enjoy a private terrace with jacuzzi.

Exploring the Lake

I then caught the ferry across the Lake to Bellagio, which runs frequently and is a short stroll from the hotel. Bellagio is hillier and busier than Tremezzo but lovely to visit and walk around. Float planes are a regular sight overhead as visitors see the beauty of the lake from above. With such beautiful surroundings it’s no wonder that they only have a handful of rooms left available for the year, so if you are thinking of travelling, it’s important to bear that in mind and book in quickly.

Your Next Escape

Even though my stay in Lake Como was brief it left a lasting impression. I’ll certainly be going back to delight in this magical destination & experience some of the other lakes and their resorts.

I would love to help you create your next escape to the Italian Lakes.

Why not twin some of the lake resorts together or add a city such as Verona or Venice to your trip.

And remember with our membership of Virtuoso – of which the Grand Hotel Tremezzo & many others are members – you get added benefits that other guests don’t receive, such as late check in/check out, upgrades on arrival etc. Get in touch for specific details.
